Move-in day at the University of Wyoming is August 24-27 and you will be required to connect your computer to the Internet in your dorm room. There is a procedure that needs to be followed to assure that you receive a quick and easy installation of your equipment without encountering problems.
Wireless routers on the UW campus are not your normal Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Optimum or CenturyLink. Setting up your household router by its default settings will cause the Internet in your to stop working. Please read the ResNet website for more details on setting up a home router for use on the UW network.
There is a flier that is placed in your dorm room and a sticker that is placed on the port with how to plug your computer into the wall. If you do not have a flier in your room, your Resident Advisor (RA) will have one. Do not start your installation without reading the flier first. You will also find an Ethernet cable in your room that has to be returned at the end of the academic year to avoid a $15 charge. All residence halls are wired differently.
If you have followed the instructions left in your room, and you are still experiencing technical problems, the Service Center at ResNet is available to assist you. ResNet requires that you visit them first and bring your equipment with you that will be used for the installation. If ResNet discovers that they need to do a port visit they will visit your room one time only.
Once your Internet connection is working, you will need to hook up to the wireless network and it is easy to do. UW ResNet is for the residential areas on campus. UWYO is the recommended wireless network for UW faculty, staff and students and UWguest is the recommended wireless network for guests that are considered parents or friends, etc…
If you take the time to follow the simple easy steps to set-up the Internet service in your room, you will avoid the typical installation problems and delays in getting your computer running. The Service Center at ResNet is available to assist all students Mondays through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. They can be reached at (307) 766-2989 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org ResNet is located in the Information Technology Center across from the dorms in office 160.
